What ho! Amish People......
I have a very good friend who is part of the Amish community in America......
....and I correspond with him from time to time......
....usually by handwritten letter........
...... as he refuses to correspond by email.......
....mainly because he doesn't have a computer.
I am always struck by his strong sense of values.....
....something that seems to have been passed down through generations of families over the years.
Of course there are many jokes about the Amish people....
....and their apparent lack of desire for modern technology.....
.....but in many ways they are very much the same as the rest of us.......
....on lifes journey for self-fulfillment.
When he last wrote to me he mentioned his 'troublesome' younger brother 'Jebediah'.....
....who was going through a bit of a 'Rebellious Phase'
Apparently everything was fine at the beginning......
...he seemed very happily married to his lovely young wife......
....then my friend started to notice things.....
....small things at first....
....that made him realise that his brother.....
..... was slowly.........
..... changing.
The first thing he spotted was that.......
......his brother had taken to wearing his hat on backwards......
......and that sometimes he would just lie in bed until after 5 a.m!
He then heard that his brother was pulled over by the cops
as he was riding his horse and trap down the high street .....
........whilst under the influence.......
..... of strong cottage cheese.
Jebediah's young wife then mentioned to my friend.......
.......that whilst cleaning their bedroom......
..... she happened to find.........
....... a secret stash.....
....of coloured socks!
....and to make matters worse.......
..... in amongst the socks........
....... (and this part was particularly difficult for her).......
......there were some pictures of 'other women'......
......and some of them were.....
....without bonnets!
But it was when Jebediah turned up at a barn dance in full 'Kiss' makeup......
.....that my friend finally had to 'have a word with him'.
My friend tried to draw his brothers attention to the changes that had recently been noticed.....
....but Jebediah just yelled at him.......
..... "Thou sucketh Brother!" he shouted.......
.....and then added......
..."and from henceforth I shalt be known as Jeb Daddy."
My friend wondered where all these disruptive thoughts were coming from......
....and he would have been quick to blame television......
....if only they had one.
They also don't have a radio either....
...but if they did.....
.....Jeb Daddy said he would listen to 'Rap'.
When I last heard from my friend he hadn't been able to make any headway with his brother .......
....so I look forward to receiving his next letter........
..... to find out if anything has changed.....
Apparently his favourite expression towards others at the moment is......
......"Talk to the hand, 'cause the beard ain't listening"
.......All part of growing up I suppose.
